This squid is the jewel squid, Stigmatoteuthis (= Histoteuthis) arcturi. Among its peculiarities is the fact that one eye is enormous and one much smaller. Some biologists speculate that the eyes serve different functions and the squid orients its body to use its large eye to look upward for predators and prey silhouetted by whatever light may reach it from the surface. The other eye presumably detects bioluminescence below the animal.
