Oplophorus gracilirostris, a mesopelagic prawn, was collected between 600 and 1000 meters depth. This species can expel a cloud of bioluminescent material that glows blue for several seconds. It is believed to be a defensive mechanism allowing the prawn to distract predators while it escapes.
