This anglerfish, Melanocetus sp., is a voracious mesopelagic predator. The long pole attached to the fish’s head has a bioluminescent lure attached to the end of it, used to attract prey. In this species, there is also a bioluminescent patch behind each eye. This individual was collected between 1000 and 1500 meters depth.
